Natural Nails Are In

Many factors determine nail growth, and each fingernail will grow at different rates. Heredity and health determine how fast the nail plate will grow, although the growth slows as we age. People who use their hands a lot usually experience a faster growth rate. We equate nail strength with hardness, though in actuality, nails are only strong if they have a combination of strength, hardness and flexibility. The combination of strength and flexibility create the ideal nail plate.
Many factors can cause changes in the nail plate, resulting in lowered levels of strength and flexibility. For instance, water will absorb into the nail plate causing the cells to shift and change shape. Repeated or prolonged exposure to water can result in dry, split, brittle, or peeling nails.

* Excessive hand washing or using household cleaning solutions without protection can rob our skin and nails of vital oil and moisture, resulting in split, peeling nails.
* The nail plate is comprised of many layers of cells that lose their inner material and become flat, hard and translucent.
* Strength is a combination of hardness, and flexibility.
* Nails that split and peel lack sufficient oil and moisture.
* Dry and brittle nails: Usually due to lack of moisture in the nails or excessive contact with strong chemicals like detergents.
* Daily application of cuticle oil can help to replenish loss of moisture in nails.
* Weekly/biweekly paraffin wax treatments will also assist in locking in moisture and improving the condition of your hands and nails.
* It is the client’s responsibility to maintain her nails at home between salon visits.
* It is the technician’s responsibility to help the client maintain beautiful, healthy nails. Visit your nail tech once a week or biweekly.
* The nail technician is trained to recognize nail diseases and disorders, but not to treat them in the salon.
* Nail diseases and disorders should be diagnosed by a physician and the prescribed medication taken or used as directed.

Good communication between nail professional and customer is essential, so if you are not happy with your service or your nails, talk to your technician or the salon owner about it.
